The Oklahoma Sooners will be active in the spring transfer window. General Manager Jim Nagy said as much when on with The Oklahoma Breakdown with Gabe Ikard and Teddy Lehman last week. They've been actively pursuing an interior offensive lineman, Jake Maikkula, who entered the transfer portal from Stanford. But it's another player on the west coast that is generating a ton of buzz.
According to a report from Pete Nakos of On3, Cal running back Jaydn Ott will enter the transfer portal when it opens on April 16. Also, according to Nakos, the Oklahoma Sooners are one of the teams to watch for the dynamic running back.
Ott ran for just over 800 yards as a true freshman back in 2022. In 2023, he eclipsed 1,300 yards rushing for the Bears. Last season, he suffered an ankle injury in the opener and tried to play through it all season. His numbers took a significant hit as he was never truly healthy. With one season remaining of eligibility, Ott is looking for one more opportunity. And that opportunity may come with the Sooners.
He's a dynamic back who displays fantastic contact balance and has the breakaway speed to create big plays in the run game. Ott has really good lateral agility and burst. Back in 2023, Ott had 32 runs of 10 yards or more and 16 runs of 15 yards or more.
The Sooners have good depth at the position, but nobody that's really taken hold of the running back job this spring. With veterans like Jovantae Barnes battling injuries and no real definitive production, the Sooners have a chance to significantly upgrade their running back room with the addition of Ott.
