It seems as though many posters on this board have chosen sides on issues regarding who to keep and who to let go. One of the common themes in all of these debates is the cap implications of the decision. I notice that on a regular basis the posters debating these decisions are using differing cap numbers to make their argument, which in my mind makes the debate pointless. For example if cutting player X saves us 10 mil against the cap he may be worth letting go despite being a stud. On the flip side if cutting player X saves us 1 mil then maybe we keep him...etc. I propose we once and for all come up with at least closely estimated numbers to base these debates on. Below is a list of players commonly debated to come up with numbers on. I'd like to use this thread for debate on what the cap implications of each would be not weather or not to cut the player. Feel free to add players to the list where you see fit. The #'s I've included are only what I've heard, I have no idea how accurate these are.

Warner - 5 mil cap # 4 mil saved if cut.

Edge - 7 mil cap # 5 mil savings if cut. I've heard #'s as low as 1.5 mil in savings

Berry - Base salary of $4M + $1M in bonus money = $4M in total savings if cut

Okeafor - 4 mil in savings if cut

Wells - Wells' deal has low base salaries in the first three years, meaning it doesn't make a whole lot of sence cutting him until his base salary rise to $2.4M after next season.

Shipp- 1.5 mil in savings if cut

Holt - I believe cutting Holt would mean a $2.75 cap saving, since the $4M in garanteed money were all paid this season - meaning a $11M/4 = $2.75M cap saving.

Ross - (commonly thought of as a re-work) 1 - 3 mil in savings

Gandy - (commonly thought of as a re-work)

Fitz - (extend) - 17 mil cap # could be cut in half if not more if extended

In my mind the key is if having them on the roster is likely to make an impact in the W/L column.

Warner- Until Leinart prooves he can stay healthy and is a stud it's wise to have a proven backup IMO. We won't get a better backup so he should stick.

Edge- We don't have a legit replacement and no free agents are as accomplished at him, nor would it save us money to get them. Edge sticks.

Berry- Tough call, injuries have plagued him the past few seasons, but he provides much needed leadership and depth. Push for a restructure, if things don't work out or free agency replaces him, cut him.

Okeafor- Willing to give him one more season to show something. Versitile, provides depth if not starting, depends how he comes back from his injury. Possible training camp cut.

Wells- Provides depth at every OL position, if he gets moved to bench. If starting at G again, will probably disappoint. Cutting isn't worth being one injury from glaring holes on OL. Keep him.

Shipp- Great guy, but provides little outside of special teams anymore. That is not that hard to replace. Could be a good cut.

Holt- IMO he should get cut but I have a feeling his relationship with AW may buy him another season.

Ross- Really doesn't matter, he is useless. I wish he had done something but he hasn't outside of maybe 3 games since he has been in Arizona. Cut.

Gandy- Solid play, no adequate replacement, try to restructure.

Fitz- Extending him should be perhaps the second highest priority after making sure Dansby is a Cardinal, if not the top priority.

Below is a list of the top 25 highest salaries for 2008 for the Arizona Cardinals. This is not a players salary cap number and this list doesn't include signing bonuses or other types of compensation. However, if designate a player as a June 1st cut, this should be a good guess on what we save for the 2008 salary cap. Special thanks to Joeshmo for the link.

Cuts
Ross 2.8M
Berry 4M
Holt 2M
Shipp 1.75m

Cutting these 4 players frees up almost $10M.

Needs
1. Re-sign Pace to replace Berry. Draft or sign a veteran for depth.
2. Sign a free agent LG to replace Wells. Keep Wells for OL depth.
3. Move Rolle to Safety to replace Holt. Sign a veteran for depth.
Alt. also release Hood (2.5M) and sign veteran CB. draft CB for depth.

Thanks for the Information.

Cuts I would make.

Berry
Okeafor
Rackers
Ross
Shipp
Holt
This should give the Cardinals plenty of Cap room to go after Faneca and Trufant.

I'd keep Okeafor for one more season, but Berry must go

33 this year, and has spent half of the past 3 seasons on IR....its incredible how injury prone he is

Rackers is garbage, but he'll probably be kept, but competition MUST be brought in

Ross can go for all I care, and RFA Brown has showed that he can be a solid backup T

Shipp is making almost 2 mil this year, and he had 15 carries the past season.....you can find an undrafted FA to play STs in his place

Holt should never play in this league ever again

I know Okeafor is a fan favorite on this board. The fact of the matter is he on a down slide of his career. He is up there in age football wise. The Cardinals can save 4.5 million dollars in salary cap. That money can bring in someone who can be productive. Okeafor never produced to what he was getting paid.

He's averaged 8.5 sacks per year over the past four seasons...

Okay it doesnt seem like anyone actually read what this thread is about. This is not to debate who to cut it is about WHAT IT WOULD COST. We already have about 20 billion threads where people argue about who to cut. The problem with those threads is that no one has REAL numbers to base their arguments on. Many posters also dont realize that a players salry is not equivilant to the cap savings by cutting him. This thread is to once and for all come up with the potential cap savings of cutting players so that we have numbers to base our opinions on...in OTHER threads

7.5 sacks the past four season. I am surprise how many forced fumble he has. I still stand by my statement.

Check your math. 8.0+8.5+7.5+8.5 sacks that last 4 seasons(minus one freak injury season).

As for him not living up to his contract. Since being here his average sacks per season (minus one freak injury season) while being a Cardinal would put him in the top 25. His Tackles for loss would put him in the top 17. Thats out of 224 starters in the front 7 around the league. That puts him in the 88th percentile in sacks during the 2005 and 2006 season. That puts him in the 92nd percentile in tackles for loss during the 2005 and 2006 season. He is without a doubt living up to and has lived up to his contract.

In 2005 he was only ranked 17th in salary among DE's.
In 2006 he was only ranked 22nd in salary amount DE's.
2007 and next season will only be even lower.

He will be 32 this March. At the age of 32 to a guy that is as much of a health fanatic as he is in a league where players continually to perform and peform very well up to their mid 30s. 32 is not all that old.

So what exactly is this comment based on, "Okeafor never produced to what he was getting paid."
