For the first time, Ohio’s four high-major men’s basketball programs will all get together on one court.
There just won’t be a roof.
This fall, Cincinnati, Dayton, Ohio State and Xavier will participate in a preseason exhibition doubleheader to be played outdoors at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The event, called the CareSource Invitational - Supporting Mental Health - will pit the Buckeyes against the Bearcats and the Musketeers against the Flyers on Oct. 7 as the multi-court tennis facility will be transformed into an outdoor basketball court.
"This is great for the basketball community in Ohio," Ohio State men's basketball coach Jake Diebler said. "It's been a long time coming."
In case of inclement weather, the games will take place indoors at UD Arena in Dayton. There will not be a television broadcast for the event but tickets will be available for purchase.
This isn’t the first effort to get these teams into the same facility. With an eye on the Crossroads Classic, an annual doubleheader that used to feature Butler, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue in Indianapolis, Ohio State men’s basketball coach Jake Diebler put the creation of a similar Ohio event on his to-do list when he earned the full-time job at the end of the 2023-24 season.
"When I first got the job, I wanted something like this to happen," Diebler said. "There's so many moving parts. To get this moving takes a lot of people. I'm just excited that everybody's gotten together to make it happen."
It nearly came to pass during the 2025 preseason before falling apart late in the summer. Ohio State then played a closed, “secret” scrimmage at Tennessee before hosting Ohio University in a public exhibition. Full preseason and nonconference schedules are expected to be released later this month. Diebler said the plan is to play another public exhibition in Columbus as well as a closed-door scrimmage.
The Buckeyes have recently faced both Cincinnati and Dayton in preseason exhibition games. The Bearcats hosted the Buckeyes for a 2024 exhibition, winning 80-62 at Fifth Third Arena, while Ohio State won a 2023 charity exhibition 78-70 at Dayton’s UD Arena.
Ohio State and Xavier most recently met during the 2021-22 season, when the Musketeers beat the Buckeyes 71-65 at the Cintas Center as part of the Gavitt Games.
Dayton and Xavier last played each other during a 2024 preseason charity exhibition.
