CHICAGO — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day watched his son make his college decision this past spring.
RJ Day, who has been the starting quarterback at St. Francis DeSales since 2023, gave a verbal commitment to Northwestern in May.
“I’m really happy for him,” Day said July 29 while attending Big Ten Media Days. “Proud for him to see him go through that process and finally know where he's going. It’s great as a parent just to see someone who has a passion for something. Now he's going take this to college.”
The commitment was also a reminder that this is RJ’s last summer at home before he enrolls at Northwestern in January.
“It's a little bittersweet,” Day said.
Since Day arrived at Ohio State as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017, RJ has often trailed him in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, interacting with players and staff or working out in the facility.
“This is his journey, and it's been really rewarding to be a part of it,” Day said, “but I'm definitely going to miss him being around the Woody every day.”
RJ will be coached by Chip Kelly, who was hired as part of David Braun’s staff in December. Kelly was also the offensive coordinator for Ryan at Ohio State and when he was the starting quarterback at New Hampshire from 1999-01.
Ryan said Kelly, as well as Braun and quarterbacks coach Jerry Neuheisel, established a “great relationship” with RJ.
“You certainly wouldn’t send your son somewhere where you didn’t feel like there was a bunch of men that are going to take care of him,” Ryan said. “Certainly, I know Chip. I’ve known him my whole life, so I trust Chip, but it's more than just Chip, because Jerry's going to be with him every day, and David's the head coach.”
The Buckeyes’ Big Ten opponents for 2027 included Northwestern when RJ will be a freshman. The teams are not scheduled to meet in 2028.
When asked about the potential dynamics of playing against RJ at some point in the future, Ryan said, “We're going to deal with that when we get there. I can't tell you what that's going to be like.”
