I feel like what the Ohio State basketball team could be this year is flying a little bit under the radar. The Buckeyes retainedJohn Mobley Jr. and Amare Bynum, are getting a talented big man back in the mix with Baylor transfer Josh Ojianwuna coming back from injury after being out all last year, and have a super-talented freshman forward in Ohio product Anthony Thompson coming into the program.
That last point is something that could make Ohio State a lot more dangerous than people give it credit for. Thompson has the height, length, and skill set to be a force on both sides of the court and should be one of the best players in the Big Ten almost immediately, and has a real shot at being an NBA draft lottery pick when he comes out.
Still, though, he's just an incoming freshman, so there's not a whole lot Buckeye Nation knows about the 6-foot, 8-inch versatile wing player. Because of that, the Ohio State creative team shared a video for OSU fans to get to know Thompson a little bit more, and we have it here for you for just that purpose.
When asked what type of player he is, Thompson responded, "I'm very versatile; I can do a lot of different things on the court offensively and defensively, and I'd say something that sets me apart from a lot of other players is my ability to shoot the ball and space the floor ... you should expect a player that works really hard on both sides of the floor, on and off the court, and you know, when it's time to play, a person that's going to give its all for Buckeye Nation."
Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler is also ready to unwrap the gift that is Thompson this year.
"We're excited about Anthony joining our program. He's got an ability to score at multiple levels," said Diebler. "He's got maturity. He's fun to be around, plays with joy, and we're excited for who he is just as much as what he can do on the court ... He's coming in with great size, great athleticism, and his ability to create both for himself and for others should be a real asset for us."
I'd say Ohio State fans are also excited about who and what Thompson is for this team and can't wait to see the product on the court and what it means for the Buckeyes for the 2026-27 season. Maybe the only folks not excited for him are the opposing coaches and players that have to compete against him.
