If Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler wants to restore the basketball program to the top of the Big Ten and back among the best in the country, he'll need to stack great recruiting classes together. He's had a good 2026 class, but it can't be a show-me once cycle to not just get the program back, but to keep it there.
On that note, though there is clearly a long way to go, five-star 2027 forward DeMarcus Henry, the younger brother of freshman OSU receiver Chris Henry Jr., just dropped his final eight teams courtesy of On3's Joe Tipton, and Ohio State is included. Again, being in a final eight is nowhere near anything to get too excited about, but Diebler appears to be prioritizing his recruitment, and you would think there'd be a bit of an advantage with his older brother already being in Columbus. Oh, and his older sister Seini Henry is also an Buckeye athlete, now entering her sophomore season on the OSU women's basketball team.
Why not make it a family affair then? There are, of course, things going against Ohio State as well. Henry is from Chandler, Arizona, a long way from home. However, maybe surprisingly, the home state Arizona Wildcats aren't on the list, and the only western team among the final eight is BYU. More troubling is the blue bloods Ohio State will be competing with. In addition to the aforementioned Buckeyes and Cougars, Henry also has North Carolina, Louisville, UConn, Kansas, Kentucky, and Arkansas. That's some heavy hitters that OSU will have to somehow knockout to get his services.
As it stands, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Henry is ranked as the No. 1 small forward and fifth overall recruit in the 2027 class. He stands at 6-foot, 7-inches and weighs 190 pounds.
We'll keep an eye on this recruitment as it heats up, and we're sure some of those teams will drop off. We just hope Ohio State is the one left standing when it's all said and done.
