With Big Ten Media days officially underway, the Ohio State athletic department made an announcement that is bound to be a huge topic during the week in Chicago.
Early Tuesday, Ohio State announced it will be the fourth team in the Big Ten Conference to add a patch to its jerseys. JPMorgan Chase Bank and the university reached a deal where the Chase brand logo will be stitched on all 36 sports for Ohio State. The deal reportedly pays Ohio State anywhere from $15 to $ 17 million annually. A mark that surpasses even some deals that NBA teams have made. The patch itself is expected to be visible but not noticeably distracting on the jerseys.
For Ohio State, the agreement reflects a growing reality in the collegiate athletics space. Big Ten rivals Michigan State and Wisconsin both had previously announced similar brand deals and on Monday of this week, the University of Illinois announced a jersey patch sponsorship with Busey Bank. With Illinois reportedly receiving $6 million annually and Michigan State receiving $5 million annually, the deal announced today shows the impact of the Buckeyes' brand in the eyes of corporate America.
The Buckeyes have long been considered one of the most valuable brands in the sport and Tuesday's announcement will certainly draw attention from other coaches and media during Big Ten Media days being held in Chicago.
