The Arizona Cardinals are receiving trade calls about defensive end Josh Sweat, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Should the Indianapolis Colts show interest?
Sweat is coming off a 12-sack season with the Cardinals, in which he also generated 17 quarterback hits. Throughout his career, he has steadily gotten after the quarterback. Sweat was a Pro Bowler in 2021.
The Colts have heavily addressed the defensive end position this offseason after seeing Kwity Paye, Samson Ebukam, and Tyquan Lewis depart in free agency.
To combat that roster turnover, GM Chris Ballard signed Arden Key and Micheal Clemons, while also drafting George Gumbs Jr. and Caden Curry.
However, whether or not enough pass rush juice was added still remains to be seen. The Colts' pass rush unit ranked 30th in ESPN's pass rush win rate last season, and it is still unclear who will be starting next to Laiatu Latu this season.
Sweat still has three years remaining on his current deal, which includes base salaries of $9.78 million in 2026 and $17 million in 2027 and 2028 that would have to be absorbed by the new team.
A particular challenge for the Colts may come with having to part with more 2027 draft capital. After trading for Sauce Gardner, Indianapolis is still without a first-round pick in next year's draft.
As of now, while the Cardinals are receiving calls on Sweat, we do not know how much they are actively shopping him either.
On paper, the fit would make sense for the Colts, given the need at this position, but there are hurdles to overcome.
