The Round of 16 battle between Argentina and Egypt caused a major uproar among soccer fans.
Mohamed Salah and Egypt looked all set to knock Argentina out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they held a 2-0 lead in their Round of 16 match.
However, during the final 15 minutes or so, Lionel Messi spearheaded Argentina’s comeback and finished the game with a 3-2 win.
Since then, many have called the game rigged in favor of the defending champions, and this includes New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Zohran Mamdani says Egypt were ‘robbed’ against Argentina
The exciting World Cup game featured a controversial decision where Julian Alvarez’s tackle on Salah wasn’t given as a penalty. As a result, many have spoken against the supposed unfair treatment of Egypt.
Mamdani addressed the controversial decision during a recent speech where he openly showed support to the African nation.
“It means agreeing with your friends that Egypt were robbed yesterday,” Mamdani said.
Mamdani smartly dropped this brutal swipe during his speech when explaining how New Yorkers will save time with the introduction of new bus lanes.
The NYC Mayor’s callout was welcomed with cheers, but it won’t change the fact that Egypt bottled a 2-0 lead against Argentina.
