New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen won’t be going anywhere for a while yet.
We found out a while ago that Schoen, who was in the final year of the five-year deal he signed in 2022, signed a contract extension. However, we hadn’t yet learned the terms of the deal. Giants’ insider extraordinaire Gary Myers learned, and revealed, the length of the deal on Thursday.
The Giants were adamant that Schoen would remain the Giants GM after John Harbaugh was hired as the Giants’ new head coach. Even so, there were some who believed that Schoen would be fired at some point, perhaps after the draft. Likewise, there was the belief that Schoen was rendered irrelevant with the organizational realignment.
Instead, Schoen and Harbaugh seemed to get along well, and behind-the-scenes footage showed them in sync and working seamlessly during the 2026 NFL Draft.
It was a disappointment to some, and a mild surprise to others, that Schoen didn’t just get fired after the Draft, but got a contract extension.
Today we learned that the extension is for four years, and Schoen will (barring unforeseen circumstances) be the Giants’ GM through 2029. That lines up well with the 5-year contract that Harbaugh signed back in January, which makes him the Giants’ head coach through 2030.
While the Giants only have one winning season since Schoen became the Giants’ GM, he is coming off of two strong drafts in a row, and Harbaugh believes that the roster is better than the record shows. Hopefully an improved coaching staff will raise the existing roster to the (generally) “A” grades Schoen’s drafts have gotten and validate the Giants’ faith in him.
