This past season, the Denver Nuggets had a very good regular season, but after a disappointing postseason that exposed various roster holes, the 2026 offseason becomes very important for them.
The Nuggets lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves 4-2 in the first round of the 2025-2026 playoffs despite the Timberwolves dealing with some injuries. Financially, the Nuggets are also in a tight situation as they may be forced to move some pieces around in order to add new faces.
After their Game 6 loss to the Timberwolves, Nuggets star and former MVP Nikola Jokic bluntly stated the team is far away from an NBA Championship. Nuggets GM Jon Wallace was asked about these comments following the NBA Draft, and he shared his thoughts on the Nuggets' approach to get back to championship status.
Wallace acknowledged the importance of Jokic's criticisms of the team. He liked that the leader of the team pointed out the issue because he made it clear it's something the Nuggets need to deal with. He also mentioned how it creates a sense of urgency for everyone in the organization.
Wallace also talked about the team's approach changing as the core group of players starts to get older. Wallace said it may have to do with the way the players view certain opponents and how they attack them moving forward.
Jon Wallace also expressed the importance of adding better ball-handling to the roster. He mentioned how he would have liked to add a guard in the draft and had the intention of moving up to get one, but it didn't come to fruition.

Denver now looks towards the free agency period, which will be the most pivotal part of their offseason. One player the franchise is going to look to bring back is guard Peyton Watson.
Watson is coming off a breakout year, and at just 23 years old, he could be the long-term answer to a secondary ball handler. Watson only played 54 games last season, but if he can play deeper into the season and into the playoffs, he could have a big impact on the Nuggets' season.
The Nuggets still have a chance to win another championship as long as they have Nikola Jokic on the roster. Jokic was an MVP finalist once again this season and has maintained his reputation as one of the top players in the world. All it takes is one good offseason, and Denver could pick up where they left off.

This was particularly interesting to me last night from Jon Wallace in response to Jokić’s recent comments saying Denver wasn’t good enough:
- a more seasoned individual team requires different approaches
- secondary ball handling remains an issue/priority moving forward pic.twitter.com/XMnU0d2BPO
