The Denver Nuggets are in a precarious position when it comes to their biggest star, Nikola Jokić.
Heading into the offseason, one of the Nuggets' biggest priorities was going to be signing Jokic to a new contract extension. He was eligible for a Supermax extension this offseason and the Nuggets were anticipating signing him.
The expectation for the Nuggets was they were going to sign Jokic to an extension because they originally discussed an extension the previous offseason, but Jokic put off those discussions until after the season.
But now, Jokic has put off those discussion again until next offseason, which at first glance is a discouraging sign of the state of the Nuggets' franchise.
While the Nuggets had a successful season on paper, finishing as the third-seed in the Western Conference despite a litany of injuries to their starting roster, but they were first-round exits against the Minnesota Timberwolves and with the Western Conference around them rapidly improving, Denver's position in the league is only increasingly threatened.
That makes Jokic declining extension conversations even more concerning. While Jokic has consistently affirmed his desire to be a "Nugget for life" to the media, his actions aren't matching up with the public sentiment that he's expressing.
On top of that, the Nuggets have had a fairly inactive offseason and haven't even signed Peyton Watson, who they declared to be one of their biggest free agent priorities when the offseason began.
With all of these factors to consider, there is a lot of intrigue surrounding Jokic and the Nuggets, something that ESPN's Bobby Marks weighed in on in a recent interview.
“The Jokić one is fascinating for me," Marks said (via Hoops Hype). "It’s interesting and I know he’s he’s come out and said that Denver is where he’s going to be and all that and he’s going to sign next year but man, I’m just looking at their roster what they’ve done or really haven’t done this off-season. I’m going into next year. They’re the same team and they still have the Peyton Watson situation to figure out here."
While the Nuggets have enjoyed a comfortable spot as one of the top teams in the NBA, largely because of the talent of Jokic, the competition around them is increasingly stiff.
The San Antonio Spurs will only get better and more experienced with time and the Oklahoma City Thunder have just cleared up even more cap space to work with in the future.

On top of that, the Los Angeles Lakers are in the process of building a team around Luka Doncic and the Timberwolves have gotten better by adding LaMelo Ball.
Staying in place might not be the optimal thing for Denver right now and with Jokic's future status up in the air, there are more questions than answers about the future of the Nuggets.
