Nuggets’ Jamal Murray now viewed as trade candidate, but Denver has no reason to move him originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Right now, it doesn't seem like the Denver Nuggets really have a chance to win a championship in the near future.
If the Nuggets are serious about winning it all in the next few years, it's probably going to take a major shake-up with their roster to do so. Not because they don't have the talent to do so, at least compared to most other teams, but because the Oklahoma City Thunder continue to look like a juggernaut.
The Nuggets weren't even knocked out by one of those teams, either, as they were sent home by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
It was a rather disappointing end to another impressive season for the Nuggets, and it's led to questions about some of the top players on the roster, including Jamal Murray, who was recently named a potential trade candidate, as crazy as that might sound to some.
“Jamal Murray, Nuggets. (Remaining contract: three years, $160 million.) One exec said it would be a “seismic” move to trade Murray, but given where this franchise is now, it’s something it would have to consider. Like Brown, he has peak value right now,” Sean Deveney of Heavy wrote.
The tough part about moving on from Murray is that the Nuggets probably won't get a player in return who does what he does. Of course, they can definitely walk away with a few first-round picks and some future assets, even some young talent who could fit into what they're looking to do.
However, with Nikola Jokic on the roster and the expectation that they'll at least be competing for championships in the future, moving Murray probably doesn't get them any closer to that goal.
