Notre Dame thought that it had found its 2028 quarterback commitment, but on Wednesday evening Trey Tagliaferri decided to back off his verbal just a week after he had made it.
While still very early, the Irish want to lock up the position as it has become one where not many have longer recruiting processes. Of the top six ranked prospects in the 247Sports Composite, two of them are already committed, including a former Notre Dame target in Niemann Lawrence who verballed to Texas.
Let’s take a look at who the Irish will turn their attention to now that they don’t have a 2028 commit at quarterback.
(Note: All rankings are according to the 247Sports Composite.)
One of the two remaining prospects with a Notre Dame offer, the 6-foot, 3-inch and 195-pound Preyear is one of the best nationally. The Alabama native is ranked as the No. 44 overall prospect. However, this one won’t go the way of the Irish, as he’s set to commit on July 10th, and doesn’t have the Blue and Gold as a finalist unless something drastic changes over the next few days.
The other that has an offer, Prock also hails from New Jersey. He’s ranked just behind Preyear at No. 69 overall, but is an inch shorts and 5-pounds lighter. He’s still got great size and attributes at the position, and Prock had a huge May with multiple top level offers. At this point, Notre Dame should put a good portion of its efforts at landing him.
Currently viewed as an athlete, Compton-Nero could also end up at safety at 6-foot, 3-inches and 185-pounds. The Irish would take him at either position, and most likely would start him off at quarterback before thinking of moving him to the secondary. Compton-Nero is an option, but probably not the best one at the moment.
The reality of the situation for Notre Dame is that there’s still plenty of time to readjust its 2028 quarterback recruiting board and send out other offers. Sure, it does look like at least three of the four early offers aren’t going to pan out, but there is more than enough time to find a replacement for Tagliaferri.
