Many of our older local members will remember his as the first man to bring professional football to Arizona. He was a world renowned local Cardiac Surgeon, pioneering a lot of techniques used today in heart surgery and heart transplants. He helped found the Arizona Heart Center among other things. He was also a charter member of the USFL, and was the owner of the Arizona Wranglers, our USFL team back in 1983. The USFL was huge for a while, and actually gave the NFL a scare. They got a lot of big names before the NFL got a chance to get their mitts on them, names like Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Doug Flutie, Bobby Hebert, Herschel Walker, and lots of others. If they had won a useful amount in their antitrust case, they'd still be going strong today or would have merged into the NFL.
Dr Diethrich helped engineer some tricky beginnings to the franchise, like a full franchise trade with the Chicago Blitz, and an eventual merger with the Oklahoma Outlaws. The USFL and springtime football were very fun while they lasted, and I hope that his passing doesn't go unnoticed by local football fans.

RIP DR Ted.
Franchise trade w/ The Blitz got us to the USFL Champ game. I remember being 10-11 going to those games at Sun Devil. Alan Risher and a RB named Murray the first year and the stacked team after the CHI trade. Greg Landry, Tim Spencer and Kevin Long both rushed for 1000 yards, Trumaine Johnson, Frank Minifield, Kit Lathrop, etc. fun times
