EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — If you were at a North football game last season there was one thing you could count on: the defense.
North held opponents to 14.8 points per game in 2025. But after graduating 10 of their 11 starters, the Huskies are hoping the younger pups are hungry.
“We try to make it simple for our kids,” North head coach Zac Nero said. “We try to get them in advantageous situations and get them to buy into us in the team sense. That’s what usually makes a defense really good.”
Thankfully for coach Nero, entering year two as the leader of this pack, he can lean on the experience on the other side of the ball.
“Offense has looked fantastic,” Nero said. “It’s kind of a flip from last year a little bit and so I’m trying to get the feel for that.”
Senior quarterback Jayden Jones and junior running back Hunter McKinney headline the group of returners trying to build off the success they saw last season.
“It took us a couple games to figure it out and buy into it after they saw it work,” Jones said. “They year, I feel like we are already rolling into it.”
McKinney became the first sophomore in North’s history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season, but he’s got his eyes on bigger accomplishments.
“Thankful to God for helping me get that, but it’s nothing too special,” McKinney said. “I haven’t proved anything yet really. I’m looking to comeback this season and get more. I want to be the number one rusher in North’s history.”
It’s a big piece of the puzzle that falls into place nicely for coach Nero as he tries to get his team ready for a conference and playoff push.
“In Indiana we have two seasons,” Nero said. “Let’s understand that, let’s focus on that. As long as we are improving as the year goes on, I’m going to be happy and ecstatic and everything else will solve itself.”
