he Norfolk State Spartans women's basketball opened play in the MEAC Women's Basketball Tournament with a dominant win Thursday, while the Norfolk State Spartans men's basketball saw its postseason run end in a close quarterfinal loss in the MEAC Men's Basketball Tournament.
The third-seeded Spartans pulled away from sixth-seeded Morgan State Bears women's basketball for a 69–43 victory to advance to the semifinals.
DaBrya Clark set the tone early for Norfolk State, knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Spartans a 6–2 lead. Morgan State kept the game close in the opening quarter, but Norfolk State began to create separation in the second.
Anjanae Richardson soon joined the scoring effort, hitting a mid-range jumper from the elbow to help extend the Spartans’ lead, while Jasha Clinton added to the offensive surge.
Clark, Richardson and Clinton each finished in double figures, combining for 43 points. The trio also made a significant impact on defense, combining for eight steals and three blocks.
Norfolk State stretched its lead to 20 points in the third quarter and never looked back, routing Morgan State to keep its championship hopes alive.
The Spartans will face Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks women's basketball in the semifinals Friday as they pursue a fourth consecutive MEAC tournament title.
On the men’s side, fourth-seeded Norfolk State fell to fifth-seeded South Carolina State Bulldogs men's basketball, 88–82, in the quarterfinal round.
Norfolk State entered the matchup after winning the teams’ previous meeting by nearly 20 points, but South Carolina State reversed the outcome by building an early double-digit lead in the first half.
Elijah Jamison, the MEAC Sixth Man of the Year, led the Spartans with 24 points, helping keep Norfolk State within striking distance. Anthony McComb added 21 points.
The Spartans cut the deficit to four points late, but South Carolina State regained control behind a 28-point performance from Jayden Johnson.
Despite a late push, Norfolk State could not complete the comeback, marking the first time the Spartans have lost their opening tournament game under head coach Robert Jones.
South Carolina State will face Howard Bison men's basketball in the semifinals Friday.
