SHREVEPORT, La (KTAL/KMSS) — LSU Shreveport baseball (6-0) completed a sweep of Hope International (4-4) in a doubleheader on Sunday.
Game 1: Hope International 8, LSUS 19
The Pilots trailed early 2-0, before the offense exploded for 19 runs. The offense took over in the third inning with six runs, followed by four in the fifth inning and seven runs in the seventh inning.
Makana Olaso went 4-for-5 from the plate with four RBIs and a monstrous home run to left field. Junior infielder Quaterrion Walton recorded two triples, scoring four times for the Pilots.
On the bump, senior right-handed pitcher David Hankins threw 3.2 innings, picking up the win in relief.
Game 2: Hope International 1, LSUS 2
Game two of the doubleheader provided solid pitching with an incredible finish.
Hope International got the scoring started in the sixth inning when Royce Clayton tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by David Shackelford, giving the Royals a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the bats for the Pilots got hot as Carlos Sanchez delivered the game winning two-RBI double, to give LSUS their first lead of the game.
“I feel amazing because, I be the guy clutch in that situation and help my team to take this win, today,” Sanchez stated.
“Sanchez can hit, he’s one of the better hitters in this country if you ask me, he’s one of the better hitters in the country in junior college baseball last year, and, that’s why he’s here, you know, that’s why we did what we did to bring him in. Moments are not too big for him, and, you know, he struggled a little bit offensively tonight in certain areas, but that ball was absolutely crushed, you know, the base of the wall in center field, which is the deepest part of the park here,” head coach Brad Neffendorf said.
During the top of the ninth, Hope had two runners on but senior right-handed pitcher Robert Lastra shut the door on Hope, sealing the win for the Pilots.
The Pilots return to action on Friday, Feb. 6, against No. 25 Central Methodist (MO) in Sterlington, La. First pitch is at 2:30 p.m.
