No. 1 2027 basketball recruit Marcus Spears Jr. has committed to Texas coach Sean Miller and the Longhorns. But that's not all. The son of former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman and current ESPN analyst Marcus Spears will reclassify and join the 2026 class. That means the 17-year-old can play in the upcoming season.
Spears, who just turned 17-years-old this spring, will head to college a year early. And he won't be a one-and-done prospect. Unless he transfers, the 6-foot-9 will be in Austin for two season. Due to his April birthday, he won't be eligible for the 2027 NBA Draft.
Rivals/On3 has reranked its 2026 class to include Spears, who drops from No. 1 in 2027 to No. 19 in 2026. Assumably the steep drop is due to his age. 247Sports was more generous, placing Spears at No. 8 in the 2026 class.
Spears picked Texas over some big name college basketball programs, including Arizona, Kentucky, LSU and North Carolina. Ultimately, it might have been family ties that tipped the scales.
The Dallas native's older sister, Cari, plays volleyball for Texas. Their mother, Aiysha, played basketball at LSU, where, their father, Marcus Sr., played football before launching his nine-season NFL career, most of which he spent with the Dallas Cowboys.
Spears was often featured on ESPN's SportsCenter at Longhorns volleyball games watching Cari play. No doubt, the NFL vet will be a fixture at Moody for the next two years to see his son play in Burnt Orange.
