MIAMI -- The Philadelphia 76ers still have three games left on the docket following a loss to the Miami Heat on Monday. They have lost 12 in a row and are sitting at 23-56 in what has been a miserable season.
It wasn't supposed to be this way. This 2024-25 season was supposed to be about getting over the hump. About contending and winning their first title since 1983. About getting past Round 2 for the first time since 2001.
Then, before the season even started, there were injury issues. Joel Embiid and Paul George dealt with injuries. Tyrese Maxey then missed time, and then a number of others, and the hits kept coming leading to a complete disaster of a season. Due to things out of their control.
The Sixers announced on April 2 that Embiid would undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. There hasn't been a timetable for him just yet while George will turn 35 on May 2 as he deals with recovering from an injury and Maxey will have to figure out his right finger sprain. There is much uncertainty as the offseason is set to begin.
"I think that the biggest thing is the focus is, obviously, gonna be on the health of these guys and how quickly we can get them back on the floor working at their game, right?" said coach Nick Nurse. "There’s, obviously, a good number of them that need to get taken care of, get back to health, but obviously, Joel and Paul will be the big concerns."
Embiid and George are certainly the biggest concerns. The Sixers committed a ton of money to both players in the 2024 offseason as they felt they had built a championship roster. Unfortunately, both have dealt with a ton of injuries.
"Can they get back and get ready to go?" Nurse continued. "And I guess, we won’t find that out for a little while and then you start unpacking and then you get back to thinking there’s some really, really good players there and start piecing it together and then we get ready to build out the rest of the roster around them."
Nurse is right in the respect that this is a very talented roster that, when healthy, can compete with anybody in the league. However, the top two stars have dealt with injuries recently and the Sixers have to figure out that component as time moves on.
