National Hockey League broadcaster Jim Gordon of Hamilton, Ontario has passed away at the age of 55. The cause of death was cancer.
When you think of people known as Boomer in sports, you think of former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason, ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman, whose nickname is Boomer, and Sirius XM NHL Network Radio host Jim “Boomer” Gordon.
However, the reason why Jim Gordon was nicknamed Boomer is rather interesting. It is because he resembled former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher David “Boomer” Wells according to Erik Pedersen of Deadline.
Gordon had been battling cancer for three and a half years. He was regularly heard Monday through Thursday as the host of The Point with Boomer Gordon, and then recently missed Fridays because of his chemotherapy sessions.
Gordon’s first role with Sirius XM was as a producer for Phil Esposito’s show. Esposito had this particular program before his role ass colour commentator for Tampa Bay Lightning radio broadcasts.
Gordon was a huge supporter of Team Canada, and would have “been crushed” by the Olympic results in men’s and women’s hockey over the last week at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
In both results, the United States beat Canada 2-1 in overtime. In the women’s result, the United States received a game-winning goal from Boston Fleet captain Megan Keller of Farmington Hills, Michigan, and in the men’s result, the American hero was New Jersey Devils center Jack Hughes of Orlando, Florida.
The family at this time is asking that donations be made to the Hockey Fights Cancer organization, and the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Humane Society.
