The NFL Players Association has made a significant change to the NFLPA Regulations Governing Contract Advisors. And it will keep pending free agents from being pestered by agents who would like to represent them.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the NFLPA has scrapped the so-called "60 Day Rule." It allowed agents to contact players who were within 60 days of contract expiration and to solicit them to make a change in representation.
Moving forward, agents are now prohibited "without exception" from "initiating any communication, directly or indirectly, with a player who has entered into a Standard Representation Agreement with another Contract Advisor and such Standard Representation Agreement is on file with the NFLPA if the communication concerns a matter relating to: (1) the Player’s current Contract Advisor; (2) the Player’s current Standard Representation Agreement; (3) the Player’s contract status with any NFL Club(s); or (4) services to be provided by a prospective Contract Advisor, either through a Standard Representation Agreement or otherwise."
Players remain able to initiate contact with a prospective agent. Also, agents may send "written materials that may be reasonably interpreted as advertising directed at players in general and not targeted at a specific player."
While the agents who aggressively solicit players in the final two months before free agency may not like it, most agents welcome it. As one agent said, "It's long overdue." Certain agents have a reputation for contacting, and pestering, all looming free agents once the 60-day window opened.
