The NFL's 2026 annual league meeting included several rule changes. A few had to do with kickoffs, including allowing onside kicks at any point in the game. . The problem that hasn't changed despite this move is that the formations teams use to try to prevent concussions; the surprise element is still out since the onside kick has to be declared.
One rule that must be watched was the decision to allow the New York office to correct clear mistakes made on the field if there are calls by replacement officials during a work stoppage by the NFL referees association.

NFL rule changes
- • A rule that eliminates a team's incentive to kick the ball out of bounds on kickoffs from the 50-yard line.
- A cautionary rule is that if there is a work stoppage by game officials, the NFL will allow its officiating department in New York to correct clear misses made by on-field officials that impact the game. This should be monitored carefully.
- Allowing teams to declare an onside kick at any point. This change was made because teams wanted to be able to use an onside kick if a penalty enforcement led to a kickoff from the 50.
- The kickoff alignment requirements have been modified for the receiving team's players in the setup zone.
- Approved an expansion of its mental health coverage to require each team to employ a full-time clinician or offer full-time coverage.
- A rule that permits players on the reserve/physically unable to perform list to begin a 21-day practice period after the team's second game of the regular season.
