With the NFL’s Week 1 games in the books, 17 players were fined for various transgressions that totaled $198,013.
No Arizona Cardinals were fined, but New Orleans Saints defensive end Jonah Williams was docked $6,500 for a facemask penalty on quarterback Kyler Murray in the second quarter.
Murray gained two yards on the play and the penalty moved the ball from the Arizona 42-yard line to the New Orleans 43. Six plays later, Murray’s shovel pass to running back James Conner was good for a 4-yard touchdown and a 17-10 lead.
Leaguewide, there were actually 18 fines, as Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch was hit for two $11,593 fines on the same play for a facemask and taunting. Now in his third season, Branch has been no stranger to fines. Last season, he was fined a total of $70,896, and his career total now is $118,391.
Five of the 18 fines were for taunting ($11,593 each) and there was one for a violent gesture (Jets defensive end Will McDonald IV ($14,491). Guess they missed the league memo and video.
There were five facemask fines, two for late hits, hip-drop tackles and striking/kicking/kneeing and one for a leg whip.
Nine of the 18 fined plays were not flagged on the field, including two for taunting, hip-drop tackles and the violent gesture.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was not included in the fine list because he was ejected for spitting before the first scrimmage play of the game. Carter was suspended one game, which the league ruled was served in the game against the Dallas Cowboys. He will play Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, but won’t be paid his game check of $57,222.
The largest fine in Week 1 was $23,186 for a hip-drop tackle by Eagles cornerback Jakorian Bennett on Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb that was not penalized.
