The San Francisco 49ers will officially be playing two international games next season.
The team announced Wednesday that they will be the designated home team for a game in Mexico. The announcement confirms what 49ers owner Jed York indicated in an interview before the Super Bowl where he said the team would likely be losing a home game to play at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City.
Neither opponent nor date has been announced yet, although it stands to reason they'd play in Mexico City late in the year with their Australia trip at the start of the season. Arizona, the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks could all be on the table. The Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders are also scheduled to visit the 49ers. Either of those teams would make sense as a Mexico City opponent because of travel.
A trip to Mexico will mark the second of two international contests for the 49ers in 2026. They also face the Rams as the designated visiting team for a Week 1 showdown in Melbourne, Australia.
San Francisco last visited what has become a home market for them in Mexico City in the 2022 season when they hosted the Arizona Cardinals. The 49ers won that game 38-10. It was their first ever game south of the border.
This year with two international games the 49ers will play the same number of games outside of the United States that they did from 2012 to 2022.
