NFL longest-tenured coaches with Mike Tomlin out: Bills' Sean McDermott near top

The early (and annual) offseason coaching carousel seems to have finally settled in 2026.

There is something worth noting pertaining to Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott.

McDermott and the Bills are prepping for the Denver Broncos ahead of their AFC divisional matchup on Saturday. Translation: McDermott still has a job.

Others were not as fortunate and among those who are no longer in their posts include John Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin. The Baltimore Ravensfired Harbaugh, meanwhile, Tomlin resigned from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The duo reigned in the AFC North for 18 and 19 seasons, respectively.

McDermott was already high on the list of longest-tenured NFL head coaches. Now he's inching toward the top.

Hired in 2017, McDermott now shares the honor as the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL.

Here’s a look at the longest-tenured coaches in the league with Harbaugh and Tomlin out.
