ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler provided the latest intel on Indianapolis Colts' pending free agent Alec Pierce as free agency draws closer.
According to Fowler, the Colts are still trying to get a deal done, with negotiations going "down to the wire."
However, getting a new contract completed before the NFL's legal tampering period opens on Monday, could be a challenge. Pierce said recently that he owes it to himself to explore all options, suggesting that he planned to hit the open market.
And who could blame him? He is going to be one of the most coveted free agents out there, with numerous teams interested, which is only going to increase his price tag.
Fowler added that Pierce "appears poised to make at least $27 million per year on a new deal."
Interested teams include the Patriots, Commanders, Raiders, and Titans, among others. The Colts are going to have a lot of competition if Pierce does become a free agent.
Now, Fowler does have some good news for the Colts as well.
"What helps Indy's case is that Pierce is close with Colts quarterback Daniel Jones and, if everything is equal, would like to stay in Indianapolis," Fowler wrote. "There's still hope for Indy, but Pierce's market will dictate his direction."
Along with maximizing his next contract, quarterback stability is another priority for Pierce as he weighs his options.
How GM Chris Ballard chose to handle the Jones and Pierce contracts was risky, and while the Colts may have the best intentions of bringing Pierce back, anything can happen in free agency.
