The New York Giants agreed to terms with John Harbaugh late on Wednesday night, positioning him to become the team's next head coach. However, as of Friday morning, no official deal has been signed.

While expectations remain that the Giants and Harbaugh will iron out all remaining details, NFL insider Tom Pelissero suggests that the union is "not a foregone conclusion."

"Reports late Wednesday night that Harbaugh was accepting the job were, at best, premature. Talks on Thursday did not result in a deal, and the sides are engaged again this morning," Pelissero said. "The Giants, I'm told, are optimistic that they're getting close to the finish line. But at this moment, nothing is finalized."

Pelissero stresses that the hold-up is not about money, but rather about Harbaugh doing his due diligence. He reports that Harbaugh's meeting with the Tennessee Titans was "postponed," not cancelled as previously suggested.

"Harbaugh has been very methodical about doing his due diligence on all the interested teams," Pelissero said. "He knows what championship organizations look like. He's 63 years old. This is probably his last stop in coaching, and he wants to make sure it's the right fit, and he's going to trust his gut."

Although things are leaning towards the Giants, Pelissero stresses, "This was not and is not a foregone conclusion.

Pelissero's latest report flies in the face of many others, who suggest the stalled deal has more to do with legal language and lawyers than any sort of second-guessing.

This isn't about John Harbaugh still making demands. He's the head coach of the Giants, spirit of the law.
Letter of the law, they've got to go through the contract and make sure language works for lawyers on both sides.
Again, the deal is agreed upon. It's legal language now https://t.co/qaero1dvwc

Understood, but my sense is that's not this. It's contract law. I compare it to the time it takes to close on a house. I think we'll get official announcement from team and Harbaugh today. No sense that anyone is backing away like McDaniels did. https://t.co/mNW1QOFUaq
