NFL Insider Calls Patriots 'Sleeper' To Trade For Former Fifth Overall Pick Despite A.J. Brown Deal originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots have traded for A.J. Brown after months of speculation, but they might not be done making moves.
For months, insiders had been talking about the Patriots trying to acquire Brown after June 1. Now that he is a Patriot, the Patriots may think about adding even more talent to capitalize. NFL insider Jeremy Fowler called the Patriots a sleeper to acquire Kayvon Thibodeaux from the New York Giants despite their interest in Brown.
"A sleeper could be the New England Patriots, funny enough," Fowler said on "NFL Live" on Friday. "Because they are in on A.J. Brown, we know that. They feel like they may be a player away. Edge rusher is one where they're a little bit thin."
Obviously, the Patriots got Brown, but they could be willing to make another move. The Patriots gave up a 2028 first-round pick and a fifth-round pick in 2027. They could be hesitant to give up more draft capital, but if they feel like Thibodeaux can be a difference maker, they may think it's worth the risk.
Between Brian Burns and Abdul Carter, Thibodeaux could be the odd man out in New York. Earlier this offseason, John Harbaugh noted that every player is tradeable when specifically asked about Thibodeaux. Thibodeaux was the fifth overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and could be a solid addition for the Patriots.
Thibodeaux finished fourth in AP Defensive Rookie of the Year voting in 2022 and had 11.5 sacks in his sophomore season. He has slowed down since, recording just eight sacks in the last two seasons, playing in 22 games. Thibodeaux would seemingly be a lot cheaper than Brown in terms of what the Patriots would have to give up. He will be a free agent after next season.
