The ramifications of the LA Rams drafting Ty Simpson are still being discussed around the league, especially since Simpson is having trouble adjusting to the Rams' offense, according to some.

Even though Simpson is a rookie and this is his first training camp, some still feel the Rams made a mistake by drafting him so high.

Former draft scout Daniel Kelly said he thought Simpson was drafted way too high and that he is doomed to be a backup quarterback in the NFL.

“Ty Simpson never belonged in the first- or second-round conversation,” he posted on X.

Ex-NFL GM calls Rams rookie Ty Simpson 'a career backup'

Kelly piggybacked on what Washington Commanders GM Scot McCloughan had said about Simpson.

“I think the quarterback from Alabama is overdrafted,” He said on Team 980 in D.C. “But it’s the position alone, you know. I think, not being a guru, but he’s like J.J. McCarthy. He’s like Mac Jones. He’s a career backup.”

A lot of this began because of the reports out of Rams camp that Simpson has not separated himself from third-stringer Stetson Bennett. The team drafted Simpson as the eventual successor to NFL MVP Matthew Stafford.

There was also news out of Rams camp that Bennett had looked better of late, but not good enough, at least so far, to pass Simpson. But to be honest, there hasn't been one standout rookie in OTAs or mini-camp so far.

Simpson was brought in to learn behind Stafford this year, not to replace him immediately. The expectation is to pick up the offense, then go from there. Simpson didn't start until his senior year at Alabama, and during that time, he got to learn from starters Jalen Milroe and Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, so Simpson doesn't seem to mind waiting his turn.

And when his time came, he proved himself to be very valuable to the Alabama offense last season.
