When one thinks of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Denver Broncos, there are several names that come to mind. John Elway, Terrell Davis, Randy Gradishar and many others are a part of the exclusive club, but there are several former Broncos who have been overlooked to receive a gold jacket.
In a comprehensive breakdown of the next Hall of Fame candidate for each team, NFL.com's Eric Edholm said that former head coach Mike Shanahan could be the Broncos' next honoree in Canton. "Shanahan’s best hope is that his two Super Bowl rings ring loudest, but Tom Coughlin (same number of regular-season victories, 170, as Shanahan) and George Siefert (higher win percentage) also boast two rings but no gold jacket," Edholm wrote.
Edholm noted that the coaching pool of candidates is a strong one — one that incredibly includes former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who was snubbed for the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 2026.
Shanahan captained the Broncos' ship from 1995-2008, and was one of the most successful coaches of his era. Shanahan is the winningest coach in franchise history, racking up a win-loss record of 138-86, including an 8-5 record in the postseason. He was also part of the regime that broke past the Super Bowl hurdle, winning back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998. Shanahan, an offensive mastermind in his own right, always got the most out of his players, producing multiple 1,000-yard rushers across his years in Denver.
Shanahan's lasting legacy not only includes his success with the Broncos, but his coaching tree since then. Part of his coaching tree includes Super Bowl 50-winning coach Gary Kubiak, Super Bowl-winning coach Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams, and of course, his son Kyle, who coaches the San Francisco 49ers.
Shanahan has been a member of the Broncos' Ring of Fame since the 2021 season, and current Denver head coach Sean Payton believes Shanahan will see his bust inside the halls of Canton one day. "It's not if, it's just what year (he gets inducted)" Payton said after practice on Thursday. Shanahan visited Broncos' training camp on Thursday, his first visit to the brand-new facility.
Shanahan will get his time, and has more than earned his spot with his coaching legacy.
The Broncos go back to practice on Friday for Day 8 of training camp.
