This year’s recipients of the Women's Flag Football International Scholarship are Laura Hernández Sánchez of Spain and Ella Sowden of Canada, the RCX Sports Foundation and NFL announced back in June.
The scholarship, started in 2024 as a partnership between the foundation and the league, provides financial assistance and mentorship to international flag athletes playing at the collegiate level in the United States. Selections are made based on a number of criteria, including athletic achievement, character and commitment to growing the game.
Hernández Sánchez recently completed her freshman year as a defensive back and wide receiver at Kansas Wesleyan University, and will be transferring to the University of Texas at Arlington for her sophomore season. Sowden is committed to Lindsey Wilson University.
“Laura and Ella embody the promise of flag football’s global future - athletes whose passion, resilience, and leadership are already shaping the next generation of the game,” said Brian Flinn, senior vice president of global flag football at the NFL, in a press release. “Through the RCX Sports Foundation’s Women’s Flag Football International Scholarship Program, we’re proud to help turn their aspirations into opportunity as they pursue their education, compete at the collegiate level, and help drive the growth of flag football around the world.”
Both women have been involved at the national level for their home countries, with Hernández Sánchez playing for Spain's national team at the International Federation for American Football's European championship and Sowden participating in senior national team identification camps in Canada.
Their collegiate journeys are one piece of a continuously growing collegiate flag landscape in the United States. Flag was recently recommended by the NCAA to become a championship collegiate sport by 2028, and participation has been ramping up at the high school level as the sport's Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028 gets closer.
