The San Francisco 49ers have been one of the most injury-prone teams in the NFL in recent years. The team ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in total points lost in 2024 and 2025, respectively, by Sports Info Solutions, and head into the 2026 season with some of their biggest players nursing serious injuries: George Kittle, Nick Bosa and Mykell Williams.

Injuries are a part of football, and there's never a clear reason why one team suffers more than another. While there has been a lot of speculation around the electrical substation located near the 49ers' practice facility, general manager John Lynch hired scientists that were able to debunk that theory ahead of the 2026 season.

One NFC front office executive has a different idea as to why the 49ers are always injured, though. In an anonymous conversation with The Athletic's Mike Sando, one executive said the 49ers simply always add injury-prone players who then get hurt.

“Everyone starts talking about the substation and, ‘Why are we always hurt?’” An exec said. “It’s because you sign hurt players. Mike Evans is going to miss 4-6 games this year, Dre Greenlaw is going to miss eight and you are going to wonder why your players are always hurt.”

This is a bit of a misnomer if you're only looking at those two signings. Evans had never missed more than three games in one season until this past year. Greenlaw, meanwhile, was originally drafted by the 49ers and was very healthy during his tenure, except for a season-ending groin injury in 2021 and his Achilles injury recovery in 2024.

The rest of the 49ers' injury issues have mostly been season-long ailments. Bosa also tore his Achilles in 2020 (at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey), while running back Christian McCaffrey missed most of the 2024 season because of Achilles tendinitis and then an in-game knee injury.

Yes, the 49ers are an injury-prone team. But the reason they are isn't all about the players they add to the roster. Sometimes it's just bad luck.
