When the New York Giants first hired both Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll to run their team three years ago, the organization became victims of their own success in that first year.

New York won their first playoff game in over a decade in the first year of the new era, and found gritty ways to win games all across the season. After that, though, expectations became so high that the team's struggles around the roster, even clear during their impressive run, were just as bad as before.

The Washington Commanders need to learn the lesson that the Giants have shown in recent years. Especially coming off a miracle season that saw them reach the conference title game last year.

Washington and New York's shocking runs have a lot of simialrities to them. For one thing, both organizations found ways to win one-score games at a remarkable rate - a sign that the talent on the roster may not have been as good, just really lucky in their first seasons together.

Following the run, both the Giants and Commanders went big during free agency to bolster the roster and in the hopes of catching up to the Philadelphia Eagles who reached the Super Bowl the previous year.

The big difference between the Giants and Commanders is that Washington has their long-term quarterback situation figured out. New York did not.

But that doesn't always guarantee success. If the Commanders are to learn any lesson from the Giants in 2022, it's that they should be striving for long-term success in the best way possible.

Only time will tell if their method works, though.
