- Highlights from Chandler Rome’s latest on 7 things learned about the Astros at the Winter Meetings:
- How tenuous are the jobs of Manager Joe Espada and GM Dana Brown? Neither has a contract past this season, no negotiations are known and Brown may not have the final call on Espada’s future since his own future is in question.
- Brown said he has no intention of trading Jeremy Pena, who has 2 years of team control remaining.
- Astros do not believe Cesar Salazar is a good enough hitter to serve as a regular backup at MLB level.
- Team would like to bring back Victor Caratini, but there are teams interested in him as a starter and likely to offer more money.
- Espada doesn’t want either Hader or Abreu to pitch more than one inning.
- Espada wants to use Spring Training to see what young relievers are ready to step up and handle leverage roles.
- Brown said the Astros had a lot of conversations addressing “return to play” procedures, but would not address them publicly. The team did not renew the contract of long-time head athletic trainer Jeremiah Randall.
- Recently signed SP Ryan Weiss will compete for a spot “in the back-end” of the rotation according to Brown, as well A.J. Blubaugh and Nate Pearson.
- Brown said SP Lance McCullers Jr. is “locked in” heading into the final season of his contract and said he is “excited about seeing him in Spring Training”. Brown feels McCullers is motivated to prove he can still be a quality major league pitcher.
