Newcastle United look set to net less than £70 million ($94.2 million) from the sale of Bruno Guimaraes, as Arsenal secure a cut-price deal for their top midfield target. The two clubs have been in negotiations for several weeks, with behind-the-scenes discussions conducted through intermediaries to help establish a potential transfer fee.

football.london understands that Newcastle had been holding out for a minimum of £80 million ($107.8 million), but Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta has successfully negotiated the asking price down to a compromise figure in the region of £75 million ($101.1 million).

However, due to the terms surrounding Guimaraes' original move from Lyon, including a specific sell-on clause, Matthias Jaissle's side will fall short of maximizing the full transfer value.

Sell-on clauses can take various forms, either as a percentage of the total fee paid in a player's next transfer, or, as is the case with Guimaraes, as a percentage of the profit generated above the club's original purchase price.

Newcastle agreed a £35 million plus £6.6 million in add-ons deal (total of $55.6 million) to sign Guimaraes from Lyon in 2022, with the French club retaining 20% of any profit from a future sale.

Assuming all add-ons have been triggered, with Newcastle having qualified for the UEFA Champions League, the Magpies stand to make a profit of approximately £33.9 million ($45.6 million), meaning Lyon would be entitled to £6.78 million ($9.1 million) from the transaction.

The £68.22 million ($91.9 million) Newcastle will receive from the Guimaraes sale falls well short of their initial expectations, with early valuations placing the midfielder at £100 million ($134.6 million)— the same fee they commanded when selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.

Factoring in that Arsenal stand to pocket approximately £7 million ($9.4 million) from the departure of Christian Norgaard, who is anticipated to move to Everton, the Gunners have effectively reduced the net cost of acquiring Guimaraes to below £70 million ($94.3 million) — all while delivering a substantial upgrade in their midfield.

When all is said and done, Arsenal have emerged as the clear winners in this transfer battle. Newcastle, meanwhile, face intense scrutiny following a summer of significant departures, leaving the club with pressing questions about the direction ahead.
