Newcastle United are exploring a move for former Liverpool forward and current Al-Hilal striker Darwin Nunez as part of their squad rebuild in attack.

“Newcastle United have Al-Hilal striker Darwin Nunez on their list of potential attacking targets this summer,” Football Insider reported on May 11.

The 26-year-old is expected to leave Al-Hilal after falling out of favor following the arrival of former Real Madrid great Karim Benzema, creating a potential opportunity for Premier League clubs to bring him back to the UK.

“The Uruguayan has fallen out of favour with the Saudi Pro League side, and the Magpies, Chelsea and Juventus are all plotting moves to try to sign him,” the report says.

Newcastle’s interest reflects their clear, desperate priority to strengthen a striker corps that has been awful all year long despite the massive spending on the position last summer.

“Newcastle are prioritising a new striker signing this summer,” the report adds.

Nunez’s situation could make a deal more feasible than a typical transfer, with uncertainty surrounding his current contract and a possible release from the Saudi club paving the way for Newcastle or any other suitor to pounce and acquire the Uruguay international on a free.

“The 26-year-old could potentially have his deal terminated by Al-Hilal,” the report says. “Sources have indicated that the interested parties would have to come close to matching his ‘huge contract’ in order to get a deal done.”

Newcastle have tracked Nunez for years, dating back to his time in Europe, and could now have a realistic chance to bring him back to the Premier League.
