Newcastle not giving up on Europe ‘dream’ after Brighton win

Bruno Guimaraes has said Newcastle United are not giving up in the fight for Europe after beating Brighton 3-1 at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe’s side snapped a four-game losing run with an impressive performance against the high-flying Seagulls.

Brighton started positively in the clash but it was Newcastle who opened the scoring inside 12 minutes, as William Osula broke the deadlock following an error from Bart Verbruggen.

Dan Burn headed home a second for Newcastle against his former, to put the Magpies in a commanding position at half-time.

Jack Hinshelwood’s response for Brighton set up a tense finish, and there was a sense of relief around St James’ when Harvey Barnes netted a late third for the home side.

The win lifts Newcastle to 13th, in a congested chase for Europe. Newcastle are four points from eighth, a position that could yet deliver Europe, and captain Guimaraes has said that the ‘dream’ remains alive. Brighton drop to seventh, after Brentford beat West Ham to climb above the Seagulls.

“It felt very good, in the changing room before he game we knew today was important for us, chasing European football for next season. The points are crucial, we keep dreaming and believing,” he said, as per the BBC.

“It was a tough game, Brighton are a good team. Today for everything we have done we deserve the win.

“They had a lot of chances. In the first half we were better but second half they were better. I am glad we could keep three points.

“We are looking up not down. We can still play European football next season, we must win the next three games.”
