Newcastle United and Arsenal have reignited their pursuit of FC Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, according to Correio da Manha. Eddie Howe and Mikel Arteta are at St James’ Park and the Emirates Stadium respectively.

The Magpies have placed the ‘fantastic’ Danish international at the top of their target list as club captain Bruno Guimaraes edges closer to a high-profile exit from St James’ Park.

With Arsenal actively working to finalise a deal for Guimaraes, Newcastle face the urgent task of securing an elite replacement. Having already lost Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the summer transfer window, the Magpies’ hierarchy cannot afford to enter the new Premier League campaign short on options in midfield.

Enter Froholdt. The 20-year-old midfielder has seen his stock rise rapidly since joining Porto from FC Copenhagen. Renowned across Europe for his tireless box-to-box work rate and exceptional ball-carrying ability, Froholdt has received glowing reviews from scouts who view his energetic profile as an ideal fit for English top-flight football. However, securing the rising star will require significant negotiations. Porto hold strong leverage, with Froholdt under contract until 2030, and the Portuguese giants have initially directed suitors toward his 85 million euro release clause.

Should Guimaraes complete his anticipated move to North London, Newcastle are prepared to act swiftly to avoid a bidding war, with Arsenal and Bayern Munich also keeping tabs on the player’s development.

While backup options such as Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson and Botafogo’s Danilo remain under consideration at St James’ Park, Froholdt is Howe’s preferred candidate to lead the next evolution of Newcastle’s midfield.
