New York Yankees trade proposal sends Anthony Volpe to lousy NL team for 25-year-old All-Star shortstop originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The shortstop position is one of the top talking points surrounding the New York Yankees, as Anthony Volpe hasn’t been great. One proposed deal looks to address the position with a major shake-up.
In a mock deal from Thomas Carelli of Sports Illustrated, New York would land infielder CJ Abrams from the Washington Nationals in a swap centered on both MLB talents and prospect capital.
Yankees receive: Abrams
Nationals receive: Volpe, Bryce Cunningham, Prospect to be named
“Yankees fans are absolutely fed up with Volpe. As for now, Jose Caballero is the listed starting shortstop. This is due to Volpe's injury, but still, not great,” Carelli wrote.
From an offensive standpoint, Abrams is a lot better of a player than Volpe, but to say that he doesn't have his issues on both sides of the baseball would be a bit unfair, as he's good but not great.
Carelli did acknowledge Volpe’s defensive value, but questioned his long-term position of staying in the Bronx. With Volpe set to start the season on the IR due to offseason shoulder surgery, there's a possibility that if Jose Caballero plays well enough, he won't have a place to play on this team.
“Volpe can still be good — he was a Gold Glove. However, his time in New York is nearly over.”
It's unfortunate that it's gotten to this point, but if the Yankees are serious about winning, it might be better to do it now than in the future.
