Thanks to a historic start from the starting pitchers in Queens, the New York Mets have been one of the best teams in baseball to start the 2025 season.
Last season was the team’s first year with David Stearns, the president of baseball operations, running the show. Despite a 24-35 start in 2024, the team significantly improved as they reached the NLCS, where the Dodgers ended their season, however Stearns deserved much of the credit.

Stearns advocated for Mark Vientos to be the starting third baseman, who finished with 27 homers and 71 RBIs, and promoted Jose Iglesias to the majors, who had a .337 batting average.
After year one, the Mets showed drastic improvements. Stearns has implemented a unique approach to build the pitching staff, putting an emphasis on cost effective signings, player development, and pitching diversity.
It’s safe to say that it is working so far. Stearns’ strategy is helping the Mets achieve something that no other starting pitching staff has ever done.
Clay Holmes, the former Yankees closer, and Griffin Canning, who put up a 5.19 ERA represent two high-risk talents who Stearns put his faith in. Tylor Megill was demoted to Triple-A for a stint last Summer and David Peterson, who posted a career best 2.9 ERA in 2024 offer some reliability.

Leading the way for the Mets pitching staff has been Japanese phenom Kodai Senga as he’s having his best season yet in the majors. Through eight games, Senga has given up six earned runs in 44.1 innings and has 42 strikeouts.
Advanced analytics and state of the art technology have been massive when it comes to improving this Mets team. New York has a pitching lab, where athletes can refine their pitches, build confidence, and develop different grips on the ball.
It’s been a dominant start to 2025 for Stearns’ Mets and his emphasis on depth, diversity, and analytics have transformed the Mets into a true World Series Contender.

The @Mets now have five different players this season with a sub-3.15 ERA & 40+ strikeouts through 8 starts (Canning, Holmes, Megill, Peterson, Senga).
