The New York Giants loaded up on wide receivers this offseason in an effort to surround quarterback Jaxson Dart with as many viable offensive weapons as possible.
The Giants currently have 14 wideouts on their pre-camp roster. Only seven, possibly eight, will make the final 53-man roster.
Malik Nabers is their No. 1, and veteran Darius Slayton is listed as the No. 2. They are both rehabbing from injury as we head into the six-and-a-half-week break between minicamp and training camp. They are assured roster spots if healthy.
Malachi Fields was selected in the third round of this year's draft and, provided something unforeseen does not occur, will also be on the team. Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III were signed in free agency, so five spots are spoken for before the Giants even open their camp in late July down in West Virginia.
The competition for the few remaining spots will be fierce. Three veterans -- Juju Smith-Schuster, Odell Beckham Jr., and Braxton Berrios -- were recently signed as insurance in case Nabers and/or Slayton have any setbacks.
Then there are the others. Isaiah Hodgins was brought back, as were Jalin Hyatt, Beaux Collins, Dalen Cambre, Xavier Gipson, and Ryan Miller.
Which leads us to a player that head coach John Harbaugh and his staff are giving a "clean slate" to: Hyatt, a 2023 pick the Giants traded up to get, who has yet to score an NFL touchdown.
Hyatt has played in 41 games in his three years with the Giants, but has caught just 36 of 73 targets for 470 yards. He has been targeted just 33 times over the past two seasons and has become a forgotten man. He was a healthy scratch for seven games in 2025.
That might be changing with a new coaching staff in-house. Keep in mind that the current general manager, Joe Schoen, was the one who made that decision to move up to take Hyatt in 2023. It was Brian Daboll and his staff who did not develop him.
Schoen wants to salvage something out of Hyatt in the final year of his contract. Still just 24, Hyatt will get a shot to prove himself. He's done it before.
Now fully healthy after a lower-body injury, Hyatt has looked good in practices thus far. He is wearing jersey No. 13, which was Beckham's number during his time here with the Giants from 2014-2018. Many believe that Beckham, who is now wearing his college number (3), will get No. 13 back after Hyatt is released.
Don't count on that yet. Stranger things have happened. Hyatt was once clocked at 24 MPH, a speed only eclipsed by Tyreek Hill, and he scored five touchdowns in a game against Nick Saban's Alabama defense while at Tennessee. The talent is there.
Hyatt has also had very limited time with Dart. Granted, with the current glut of players in the wide receiver room these days, he may not have many chances, but if he can make the best of those chances, he just might stick.
Any wide receiver at the end of the roster must have some kind of special teams value. If Hyatt can display some value on teams, he'll better his chances to make the club.
