Football is a game of inches, and one play can win or lose a game. But sometimes the stakes are higher, and one team's misfortune is another team's opportunity.

Such is the case for the New York Giants, who benefitted greatly from a missed field goal -- wide right -- in Week 18 of the regular season.

With a chance to win the game and clinch the AFC North title, Baltimore Ravens kicker Tyler Loop pushed a 44-yard field goal to the side, setting off a chain reaction that resulted in the Giants' biggest and most significant hire since Tom Coughlin in 2004.

Had Loop made the kick, Baltimore would have headed to the playoffs, and John Harbaugh would likely still be their head coach. Instead, those few inches led to Harbaugh's firing, and the Giants pounced.

Early on Thursday morning, the Giants and Harbaugh agreed to a deal that will make him the team's next head coach. It comes in the aftermath of an extremely aggressive pursuit only made possible by Loop.

Loop was crushed by the miss and Harbaugh was there to console him, but Giants fans are eternally grateful.
