It was expected Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter was not going to have to wait very long to hear his name called in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night. And as the draft got underway, that proved to be the case. Carter was selected with the third overall pick by the New York Giants in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday evening in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The Giants were one of the teams most likely to end up drafting Carter with one of the first few picks in the draft. After the Jacksonville Jaguars traded up to the second overall spot with the Cleveland Browns to select Colorado cornerback and wide receiver Travis Hunter, all the Giants had to do was make the call many suspected they would.

Abdul Carter is coming off a season in which he was named a unanimous All-American and the 2024 Big Ten defensive player of the year and earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second season in a row. Carter was also a second-team All-Big Ten player in 2022. The Philadelphia native attended La Salle College High School and committed to Penn State in the Class of 2022.

Carter ended his college career with 172 total tackles and 104 solo tackles. He recorded a Big Ten-leading 12 sacks in his final season on campus (Ohio State's JT Tuimoloau ended the season with 12.5 sacks with the benefit of a sack in the national championship game).

As the no. 3 overall pick of the draft, Carter is the highest-drafted player from Penn State since the Giants drafted Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. Carter is the highest-drafted defensive player from Penn State since Courtney Brown and LaVar Arrington went back-to-back with the first two picks of the 2000 NFL draft.
