After a Paris game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and a bye week, the New Orleans Saints will return to action by hosting the Cleveland Browns in Week 9. The game will be on November 8 in the Superdome, the first time the Saints will be in their home confines in nearly a month. It will also be the third of four games New Orleans will play against an AFC North opponent.
Cleveland is coming off a 5-12 record in 2025. It was their third double-digit loss campaign in the last four years, save for an 11-6 playoff season in 2023 that was more like an aberration. The Saints have gone five straight years without a playoff berth themselves. New Orleans went 6-11 last year under new coach Kellen Moore, but pulled off four wins in five games down the stretch.
On paper, this looks like it should be an easy win for what should be a much-improved New Orleans team. However, the Saints haven't had great luck historically against the Browns.
Cleveland dominated this short series at the beginning. The Browns won the first eight times these teams faced, with five of those matchups in New Orleans. One of those years were when the Saints and Browns were divisional foes in the pre-merger NFL Century division during the 1968 season.
New Orleans finally broke their eight-game losing streak against the Browns in 1984 with a 16-14 triumph in Cleveland. The Saints followed that up three years later with a 28-21 win over the Browns in the Superdome. It was their first home win against Cleveland and the second of three straight wins over the Browns, their longest such streak. Since Cleveland rattled those eight consecutive wins to start this series, New Orleans actually has a 7-5 edge over the Browns but are a rather mediocre 4-4 against Cleveland all-time inside the Superdome.
New Orleans has won their last three matchups against the Browns, equaling their longest streak. Two of those games have been at home. The second of which was a 35-14 victory in 2024, the last time these teams met. It was both the largest margin of victory for the Saints against the Browns and the only time they'd scored over 30 points against them in 20 meetings.
Previous to 2026, the Saints and Browns have met four times in November. Cleveland has won three of those games, with the only exception being that resounding New Orleans victory on November 17, 2024.
New Orleans looks to have their answer at quarterback in second-year signal caller Tyler Shough. The player many wanted the Saints to draft over Shough in 2025 was Shadeur Sanders, who instead went to the the Browns in the fifth round. Sanders had his own opportunities as a rookie, but comes into 2026 fighting for the job with fellow 2025 rookie Dillon Gabriel and veteran Deshaun Watson. Nevertheless, this November we could get to see a quarterback showdown between the player some fans wanted in Sanders and Shough, the correct selection for the Saints.
