On a day that should be filled with happiness and excitement due to New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees' Hall of Fame enshrinement, the team has been hit by worrying news. So far in training camp, it has not been the easiest time regarding injuries. Some players have been dealing with minor things that have kept them out day to day, while others, like Bryan Bresee, will be out for the season.
Injuries are always going to happen in training camp, no matter how many changes are made in the staff or how much prevention is done, but when it starts to pile up, that's where it gets scary. The Saints were able to avoid this outcome last offseason, and although the injuries really began to show up late in the season, many of them could not be prevented.
With hope at its highest since the Brees era, the Saints can't afford to deal with injuries, especially with the depth still being an issue in some areas. The rebuild is too early for the Saints to be fine after injuries hit their roster, and already it's getting worrying.
As I mentioned, the Saints have already faced some injuries, but three that happened today could have a major impact depending on their severity.
First, we had Chris Olave deal with a wrist injury. This one is the most minor one and will hopefully be nothing moving forward, but an injury is an injury. With Chris Olave, any time he has to leave the field to get some help on the sideline for an injury makes fans have to take a deep breath. The good news is that he went back to practice shortly after, but it will be something to monitor.
The next two are probably worse. Both Julian Blackmon, who is one of the starting safeties, and Dillon Radunz, probably the Saints' most important depth piece on the offensive line, went down with knee injuries. As of now, there is no news on the severity of these injuries, but with them being to the knee, that's a worry. If Blackmon is out for an extended period of time, the Saints need to sign a safety. Jonas Sanker was the starter last season, but he will be the slot corner this year, and Jordan Howden may not be better than other options the Saints could go with.
In Radunz's case, if he is out, the Saints could deal with it because he's not a starter, but if an injury occurs on the interior of the offensive line, good luck. The depth could really get exposed if development in that group does not occur.
Hopefully, both injuries are going to be minor, but if they aren't, some moves will have to be made.
