New-look offensive backfield may be Chiefs' most improved unit in 2026

The Kansas City Chiefs are in line to have a much better ground game in 2026 than they mustered last season.

In free agency, the Chiefs made the signing of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III their top priority, giving Patrick Mahomes a 1,000-yard rusher with championship experience under his belt to pair with Andy Reid's legendary air attack.

Kansas City's front office also selected former Nebraska Cornhuskers standout Emmett Johnson in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, securing the Big Ten’s leading rusher from the 2025 season as a hedge against Walker's future production.

Walker is a true bell-cow back who brings a blend of elusiveness, excellent footwork and speed to any offensive backfield he leads. The former Michigan State Spartan's style of play figures to pair well with Johnson, who should prove to be exactly the type of spellback the Chiefs need to keep their offense humming with consistency.
