Muskingum Valley wrestling teams enjoyed plenty of success at sectional tournaments throughout the East and Southeast districts on Feb. 28-29.

The top four qualifiers in each weight class advance to district competition on March 6-7.

Southeast District​


New Lex, Sheridan roll to titles: Two separate Division II sectionals were held at Gallipolis Gallia Academy, where Perry County schools New Lexington and Sheridan combined for nine champions in earning team titles.

New Lex, which had a qualifier in every class, saw Brody McNabb (106 pounds), Tyson Spicer (144), Harrison Ratliff (150) and Luke Thompson (165) win titles and Ashton Thurman (113), Hunter Hinkle (157) and Chase Shriner (215) take second.

Gunner Patton (126), James Sharp (132) and Danny Waite (138) were third and Dalyus Nealy (175), Beau Garren (190) and Alberto Boggess (285) fourth. The Panthers totaled 237 1/2 points, almost 100 more than runner-up Circleville Logan Elm.

Ratliff picked up a major decision against 11th-ranked Will Enochs, of Miami Trace, in the finals.

Among the upsets were Gallia Academy's Evan Warren, who was ranked seventh at 144 in the latest Borofan rankings, defeat fourth-ranked Cael Smith, of Chillicothe, in the finals at 138. Smith decisioned Waite, ranked 17th, 7-3, in the semis.

Cash Owen (113 pounds), Max Wilson (120), Maddox Laymon (132), Luke Skinner (150) and Slade Frame (157) were among Sheridan's champs, all of which came in convincing fashion as the Generals totaled 234 1/2 points — 59 more than runner-up Washington Court House.

Seth Johnson (106), Wyatt Sweeney (126) and Oliver Walraven (190) were second, Gage Moore third (215) and S.J. Shriner fourth (175). Foster Jones was fifth and is an alternate at 144.

Each qualifier returns to Gallia Academy for the district tournament, along with both East District sectional qualifiers.

East District​


MVL strong at Claymont: There were few tests for Muskingum Valley League teams at the Division II tournament at Claymont, where seven claimed titles in mostly dominant fashion to qualify for the district meet on March 6-7 at Gallipolis Gallia Academy.

John Glenn was only sixth of nine teams, but the Muskies produced three champions in senior Owen Edwards (157 pounds), Dominic Bates (175) and Kian Barton (215), while fourth-place Maysville had two champs in Ziggy Sandobal (113) and Carter Abella (126).

Sandobal, who was ranked 21st at 120, picked up a major decision of Claymont's 14th-ranked Nash Edwards in the finals.

Philo's Gibson Swartz won by a 10-3 major decision over Minerva's Timmy Kirkpatrick in the finals at 190, while Tri-Valley's second-ranked Logan McClellan was a force in winning the 285-pound title with three first-period pins.

Philo also got a runner-up from Ryan South at 120 and Dakota Kinney at 215, where he was pinned by Barton late in the third period, while Maysville's Jerik Winland fell to Bates in the finals for the second straight week at 175.

Maysville's Jace Daniels (144) and Carson Larimer (215), Philo's Griffin Swartz (157) and Tri-Valley's Hayden Stevens (150) were third and Tri-Valley's Hadin Shoop (126), Bennett Brocklehurst (165) and Aedin Seward (190) and Philo's Robert Dorsey (138) fourth.

Trio, Goldsmith qualify for ZHS: Zanesville's Trio Ladd, coming off a Licking County League title, edged out West Holmes' Easton Ross in the finals to lead local qualifiers from the Division II meet at Steubenville High School.

Ladd was pinned by Lisbon Beaver Local's Robert Marra in 5:55 in the semifinals, but he rebounded for a 5-4 win against Ross in the third-place match. His teammate, Logan Goldsmith, was fourth after a 10-6 loss to Richmond Edison's Kaiden McAllister.

Morgan's Devin Waggy, who was MVL runner-up at 285, was fourth against a strong sectional field after as 1-0 loss to West Holmes' Dylan Sours. He was pinned in the third period by sixth-ranked Luke McMillion, of Wintersville Indian Creek, in the semifinals.

Other notable results saw fourth-ranked Robert Buccheit, of Beaver Local, edge third-ranked Marshall Laishley, of Cambridge, 4-2, in the finals at 150, while second-ranked Louden Dixon, of West Holmes, decisioned third-ranked Jake Hughes, of Beaver Local, in the finals at 157.

Additionally, fourth-ranked Bronko Braun, of Indian Valley, took a 7-6 finals loss to West Holmes' Peyton Martin at 120. Martin was ranked 10th at 126.

Five advance for Ridgewood: Aadon Slaughter's title at 150 pounds highlighted the Generals' fourth-place showing at the Division III sectional at Barnesville.

Slaughter earned the title with a 15-10 win against Barnesville's Layden Loring. Owen Hatfield was third at 106, Quinten McKee third at 138, Monti James fourth at 113 and Remington Philabaum fourth at 190 for Wood.

Crooksville qualified two in Crooksville's Chris Taylor, runner-up at 285, and Drake Horn, fourth at 126.

River View qualifies four: Russell Maroni (138), Darian Atwood (150) and Blaze Klein (165) picked up third-place finishes for the Black Bears in the Division III sectional at Sandy Valley.

Brayden Carpenter was fourth at 215 for River View, which placed sixth.

Coshocton saw Wyatt Paisley place third at 106 and Jakob Arnold finish fourth at 157; West Muskingum advanced two in Sam Huffman (120) and Jediah Wold (165), who were fourth. Meadowbrook's Logan Ellis was second (144) and Brayden Jensen third at 120.

Garaway, which had nine champions, won the team title with 270 1/2 points.

The qualifiers from the two East sectionals will convene at Coshocton for the district meet with the Southeast qualifiers.
