Here's a novel I read not long ago and highly recommend.

Hard to describe the plot without giving too much away, but it is told from the perspective of a girl who is recalling her childhood days growing up with her friends in a boarding school. But things aren't quite what they seem, as there are certain things that she mentions almost matter-of-factly that appear very strange...

He wrote Remains of the Day (made into a movie) which was a beautifully written, subtle book.

Another lovely, subtle, heartbreaking book was The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. I love that book.

Both were well-made into strange, intriguing, touching (non-commercial)movies, and both novels were really lights out.
