Brooklyn Nets guard Egor Demin came into the Las Vegas Summer League this year with the goal of showing how much he has improved from last season to this summer. Brooklyn saw Demin showcase his potential to be the kind of player they can rely on as they progress through their rebuild, but his play in Las Vegas has others around the league taking notice as well.
"It's been close to a best-case scenario summer for Demin, despite the fact that the three-ball that treated him so well as a rookie has largely abandoned him (28.9 percent)," Zach Buckley wrote on Demin for Bleacher Report. Buckley put together the first-team and second-team All-Summer League teams and Demin made the second-team because of what he was able to show while in Las Vegas.
"He not only looks too good for this environment—the Nets have won his floor time by 23 minutes—he is flashing real skill enhancements, like using his added bulk to probe into the paint and get to the foul line," Buckley continued. This isn't the first time that Demin has received recognition for his play in the summer league as No Ceilings' Tyler Rucker listed him as one of the players that was "too good" to play.
Demin, 20, finished the Las Vegas Summer League with averages of 21.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game while shooting 42.6% from the field and 30.0% from three-point land. While Demin's three-point shooting left plenty to be desired given how well he shot the ball from three-point range during his rookie season, he did virtually everything else on the floor, including having more success driving to the rim.
Heading into summer league play, Demin spoke to the media about how important it was for him to be in the weight room and get stronger so that he could be more impactful in different areas of his game. While it will take more time for him to put everything together, Demin showed enough in summer league play early on for others to see that he could be headed for a breakout sophomore season.
